2011 Fourth of July Parade Route:

Note: The Muscatine Symphony Orchestra will play on the Riverfront Park from 8:00pm till the fireworks start.   They will play the 1812 Overture right as the first fireworks go off!

You are invited to walk with DoNight and the Muscatine River Monster in the Fourth of July Parade!

We have an aquatic theme – natural considering our parade entry is built around a giant River Monster!

Just imagine: People with goggles and snorkels ‘swimming’ alongside the giant tentacles of The Kraken with epic sea monster music blasting!

Our costumes will be:
These are the basic items we will all have…you can add variety from here!

• A solid color t-shirt.  (without lettering or designs)  Bright colors will be best!
• Beach Shorts:  They could be swim trunks or any kind of shorts that you’d wear to the beach.
• Diving Mask or goggles!
• A Snorkle! (Wal-Mart has a dive mask/snorkle package for about $5)
• Bring a bag of candy to hand out yourself.

  Other items:

• A bottle of water for yourself!
• Any other beach or diving accessories you want to full out your costume.

   

Schedule:

• 3:00 pm. Staging at Jeremy Koskie’s house: 110 Union St.  Muscatine (Off Washington by Weed Park)   This is where we’ll get our costumes all ready, and wait for the call to head to the lineup.
• 4:00 pm. Head to parade lineup.  Parade starts at 5:00pm and our trip through will be over at close to 6:00.
• 9:00pm. (approx)  Fireworks at riverfront park.

Note: the parade route is about 1mile long.

Mockup of The Kraken

Hi,  I want to tell you about the public art project that several DoNight members and myself are about to bring to Muscatine, Iowa.  It’s called The Muscatine River Monster.  It combines a giant scale inflatable sculpture and a story about our city.

The sculpture is of a giant River Monster – a Kraken – with 25 foot tentacles and an insatiable appetite for tall buildings:-)

The story,  ‘Legend of the Kraken’,  imagines a giant River Monster visiting Muscatine at key times in our city’s incredibly innovative history.     Each time the monster visits, it means great things for Muscatine….and the Kraken is about to visit again!

This project is about celebrating the creative culture of Muscatine.  I believe this is a great place for artists and creative people to live and work.  With The Kraken project, I want to help other people see that as well.

With this project, I want to tell our story, and help people expect interesting and exciting experiences in Muscatine.  I think you’ll be pleased:-)

Woo Hoo! We’re very excited to have Jacob Lane working with DoNight this summer.

Jacob’s first collaboration with DoNight was the giant Mark Twain puppet we built last year for the Muscatine Fourth of July parade.  Jacob was one of the first to catch the vision and quickly became part of the core design/build team for that project.

Jacob is a journalism major at the University of Iowa and will graduate in 2012.  He was born in Phoenix, Arizona, moved to Muscatine, Iowa, then back to Arizona where he lived until finishing high school.

Jacob hosts ‘The Happy Landfill’, a weekly radio program on KRUI (Iowa City college radio).  He plays drums, listens to The Beatles, and often lets Jay-Z lyrics pass for tweets
( @JacobLane).  Other favorite music includes Deadmau5, Daft Punk, and Justice.

As a DoNight intern this summer, Jacob will manage the social media profiles for the Muscatine River Monster project, help organize and run our activities for artists and creative people, and of course help build the amazing spectacles that DoNight is known for.

He will undoubtedly pick up other significant resume items along the way too – gamer style.   (Though we sometimes doubt Jacob will actually need to submit a resume anywhere…people come looking for him.)

We’re excited for Jacob to bring his creative ideas, media skills, and impeccable musical tastes to DoNight this summer.

It’s been lots of fun to get together each week and watch, draw, laugh, and learn with the people who come to Drawing Club.  But, it’s good to change things up…and we’re taking a break.

This little girl isn't really an alien - but that scary tentacled thing behind her sure looks like one.

Our theme this week is ALIEN Flora & Fauna!

Get out your Isaak Asimov books, watch Alien and Predator movies, gaze at your Avatar poster (you don’t really have one do you?),  and get ready to draw some wild alien life forms.

And just because someone already asked,  the answer is yes,  you can draw Aliens & Cowboys if you want to.  It might be a good combination.   (Someone really did ask this – I guess there’s a movie with this theme coming soon?)

While you anxiously await that sure to be hit, come Thursday evening and draw your own alien plant & animal life with us at Drawing Club.
